At 19K Design & Contracting Victoria, we set out to prove that home renovations in Greater Victoria can be done differently. Too often, homeowners encounter cut corners, price games, and rushed jobs that don’t stand the test of time. That never sat right with us. From the start, our goal has been clear: create a renovation experience rooted in honesty, thoughtful design, and open communication.

19K Design & Contracting brings more than a decade of hands-on experience in managing everything from boutique renovations to large-scale home extensions. We saw how stressful renovations could be for families—messy worksites, unclear budgets, and poor communication. Our response was to build a company that makes the process smooth, transparent, and even enjoyable.

A Note from the Founder

Construction wasn’t a random pivot. As a kid, I spent hours sketching floor plans, obsessed with how spaces could work better. I’ve always been drawn to the idea of creating something tangible that people live in every day. After years of hands-on learning under “old-school” mentors, I learned that the details no one sees are the ones that matter most.

In May of 2019, I started 19K Design & Contracting Ltd.

Like most builders, I learned some lessons the hard way. Early on, I took on a fixed-contract renovation that lacked a tight enough scope. Costs crept up, systems weren’t yet in place, and we ended up losing nearly $10,000 on the project.

We finished that job on time, and we did it right—but that loss changed how we operate. Today, our clients benefit from clear scope documents, written change orders, and honest communication. Those systems exist because I believe in bidding on real costs, not “hoped-for” budgets.

What I love about this work is taking a space that doesn’t work and making it useful again. I’m driven by the genuine relief and gratitude clients feel when a project is finished properly.

I’m part of a busy blended family with five kids, a dog, and a house that—like any good contractor’s home—always has a project on the go. Whether I’m coaching local ball teams or working in the garden, fairness and hard work are the values that drive my life and my business. We are a queer-friendly company, and respect is non-negotiable in how we work.

Today, I hold my Red Seal Certification, and we operate fully licensed and insured. I was told once that if you go home questioning how something was left, you go back and fix it. I want to finish my day confident that our work exceeds code and is done right. That’s the mindset behind everything we build.

As the founder and your primary point of contact, Matt handles the high-level coordination, scheduling, and approvals that keep your project on track. He steps in to manage change orders and ensures that the scope of work aligns perfectly with your vision. Matt operates on a simple principle: if you go home questioning how something was left, you go back and fix it. This mindset of “done right, not just done” drives every decision he makes, from initial planning to the final walkthrough.

Lara transitioned from an apprentice role into her current position as Administrative Assistant at 19K Design and Contracting Ltd. Her time spent on-site provided her with a deep understanding of project flow and the high level of coordination required for successful large-scale renovations. In her administrative role, Lara manages scheduling, documentation, and client communication. Her unique on-site perspective allows her to maintain the same professionalism and attention to detail that define our work from the first call to the final walkthrough.

Sean is a primary point of contact on-site, responsible for the day-to-day execution of the build and maintaining clear communication with our clients. He understands projects from start to finish, allowing him to lead the crew independently while ensuring the original plan is followed to the letter. Beyond his technical skills, Sean plays a vital role in mentoring our apprentices. Outside of work, he is an active golfer and a father of two, which contributes to the patient, steady presence he brings to every job site.

With years of experience in the trade, Sean Copeman was brought onto the team for his ability to think through complex problems before they arise. He works on the tools day-to-day while keeping an eye on the bigger picture to prevent rework and delays. Known for catching the tiny details others might miss, Sean ensures the entire team stays aligned. As 19K grows, he is transitioning into a broader support role, handling site logistics so our lead hands have exactly what they need, when they need it.

Daniel serves as a Lead Carpenter, organizing and executing work on-site while maintaining our rigorous quality standards. He is meticulously focused on fit, finish, and consistency, often identifying and resolving sequencing issues early in the process. Daniel acts as a clear point of contact for clients during the construction phase, ensuring that every detail is handled professionally. As a father of two young children, Daniel brings a high level of responsibility and follow-through to every commitment he makes on the site.

Gab is a core member of our site crew, focused on developing their skills the right way—without shortcuts. They are learning to anticipate site needs and prepare materials effectively, ensuring the broader flow of the project remains seamless and safe.

Kaya is an apprentice carpenter at 19K Design and Contracting Ltd., supporting our project leads on large-scale renovations. Kaya assists with framing, finishing, and site organization while maintaining the high standards expected on our job sites. Working alongside our leads, Kaya continues to build technical skills while prioritizing clear communication and accountability. Clients will see Kaya contributing professionally on-site, ensuring projects remain safe and organized. Kaya’s pathway focuses on developing the craftsmanship and care required to deliver excellence.

Sophia works closely with our lead carpenters, learning proper sequencing, safe work practices, and attention to detail from the ground up. She is held to the highest standards of professionalism and contributes daily to the steady, respectful progress of our sites.
